This was the first week of my in depth project, and I haven’t made much progress. I spent most of last week working on my in depth contract, which I think went pretty well for me. My contract included a pretty fully, thought out plan, which I imagine will help me in the future. I planned January to be specifically dedicated to my research essay, my inspiration board and drawing drafts. So far this week, I have made a few sketches that I liked, and with a bit more work, could end up on my wall mural. I also spent some time trying to figure out how Tumblr works and which accounts had some artwork that I found inspirational. Billie helped me out with Tumblr and artwork blogs, since I knew absolutely nothing about them.
Obviously, I have worked on my research essay and done a done of research. My original research question was going to be “what makes something aesthetically pleasing?” however, it’s all subjective. Even though there are some objectives, it’s mainly all subjective, so I can’t really write much about that. So instead, I decided to change my research question to “what exactly is art?”. Art is in most cases aesthetically pleasing, so my plan is to still write about aesthetic and what it is. I really want to write about art and its philosophy around it, rather than some physiological objectives. I have learned so much about the philosophy around aesthetic through a YouTube channel named “Crash Course”. I’ve been watching this channel’s videos for two years now, and it’s amazing that a ton of my research is coming from a channel that I genuinely really enjoy and understand. There are so many factors and topics to think about throughout understanding art and aesthetic, and all of it leads to the key word: subjective. A lot of the theories that are trying to explain art, all have an answer that is subjective, however I will try my best to bring different points as to why the different answers are all valid. There is no “right” or “wrong” with art, and I really want to bring that point across. My plan for the rest of the month is to start my inspiration board and start making a full sketch plan of my mural. I know that the first part of this long process is very slow, however it’s very important to get everything planned out carefully, so that when I finally start painting, it will go as smoothly as possible.
